Ustad Ghuman Interview
My name is Akbar Ali Khan, popularly known as Ghuman Khan, I’m the descent of famous Bhedi Potra, musical family of Multan. One of our elder in the Bheeri Putra Gharana by the name of Bheer Khan Meer Alam. He was a musician and a singer. When Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya (RA) came to Multan, Bheer Putra became his disciple and embraced Islam. He added Qureshi to his name due to his reverence and love for Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya. He came to be known as Bheer Khan Meer Alam Qureshi. After embracing Islam, our elders were respected by renowned families of Multan, including Qureshi, Khakwani. They would come to the elders of Bhedi Potra for prayers on their special occasions. Our elders were expert Sarangi and Tabla players. Ustad Mian Qadir Baksh was our Tabla teacher. Our music teachers Kharana were Patalia Family, General Ustad Fateh Ali Khan. Ustad Ashiq Ali Khan and Ustad Fateh Ali Khan would stay with us for two months every year in the months of Sawan and Bado. Our family learned sarangi from Ustad Ameer Ali Khan. I learned music from Ustad Nazakat Ali Khan and Ustad Salamat Ali Khan, I lived with them for six years.
